Who’s Lorraine?

			Memphis, 1968

The first time I had a country
was the night the city burned
on TV and silence simmered
like dead limbs in the suburbs.
There was confusion in our house.

The next morning tanks cut
tracks in the deserted street.

Father said it’s our burden forever,
how man kills god in himself.
Watch the cars, called Mother
like always, pressing
the long white sleeve.
