beautiful husks
stopped at the signal
watching weeds
fill with light
barley swaying
empty lanterns
the overpass vibrating
setting sun angled in
between concrete supports
the sorrow beauty can cause in you
so empty
light shines through
from childhood
the cow field
breezes off the bay unrolling
shadows through hay like a scroll
sprouted up through a crack
next to a freeway support
a man huddled against it
hidden in a blanket
covered with light
while I wait for the signal
to click stopped
in my tracks stunned
by glowing husks as if
to say here’s a bouquet
of empty weeds
to sip sunlight through
while you wait
