Moon Trio

1.
Moon of silence, unexpected visitor.
Quickly I leave what I was doing.
Half-sentences roll back into themselves like drawers.
I will give you the smoothest pillow,
the blue glass from Mexico which certain light
can change to sky.

2.
A man from the Zuni reservation
makes parties for the full moon.
He toasts the glowing mesa,
friends arrive and orbit the floor.

Here’s one party where the honored guest
brings the gift.

3.
Alfredo in red socks
under a sliver of moon
is doing his job, occupying steps.
For years he has said: “Could be better,
could be worse.”
Tonight he is quiet, cigarette
balanced on lips.
His friend, Maria, More-Than-99, babbles
excitedly in Spanish, white nightgown
billowing out around her as if she were swimming
and the air held it up.

Moon topping chimney.

Maria, More-Than-99, says,
“We will paint this house.”
