To Be

To find water when there is drought,
to find dry shelter when there is flood,
to not wrestle with the wind but to be
a part of wind, to rest beneath the Bo tree
and watch the wolves watch the hares,
to read their prints in the dust, escape
and challenge, to know all the uses of fire,
understand the messages of clouds, study
a lifetime the ways of the sea, to be a part
and apart, to know and not know all things
are within reach. To touch, yes, to touch again.
To know nothing is against what passes
overhead at night, what floats between.
To sleep a long time, to waken.
